A story of immigration and assimilation into a new country and also a different social class. Esperanza's expectation of the celebration of her 13th birthday is shattered when her father is murdered. Esperanza's mother decides to go with the cook and gardener and their son and move to the United States. This book opens a discussion of the differences between cultures and allows students to share customs from their own culture. This story allows students to feel and experience things from another culture than theirs and will support classroom multiculturalism.
